11-hour driving limit
Beta CDL practice guide for oral pre-trip inspection answers. This is a practice and review tool, not a DMV, FMCSA, government agency, or certified training provider.

Strong Answer
The CDL/FMCSA 11-hour rule means I may drive a maximum of 11 hours only after I have taken 10 consecutive hours off duty. The 11 hours is driving time, not total work time, and it must also fit inside the 14-hour duty window. Once I reach the 11-hour driving limit, I cannot keep driving until I take another qualifying 10 consecutive hours off duty, unless a specific legal exception applies and is documented.
Learning Objectives
What a learner should be able to say out loud.
- - Explain 11-hour driving limit in state CDL oral-exam language.
- - Connect 11-hour driving limit to safe CMV operation and FMCSA compliance.
- - State the no-drive, repair, report, or documentation decision when the standard is not met.
Common Mistakes
- - Only naming the topic without explaining the safety purpose
- - Missing the no-drive or no-dispatch decision
- - Using vague language that an examiner cannot score
